Windows 7 & hardware compatibiliteit: 91% van de systemen voldoet

Wortell heeft bij een 12-tal organisaties een proefmigratie uitgevoerd naar Windows 7. Inmiddels wordt druk gewerkt aan het omzetten van deze proefmigraties naar live deployments nadat 2 weken geleden de software officieel beschikbaar is gekomen. Uit de voorbereidingen ten aanzien van deze implementaties is interessante informatie gekomen die (hopelijk) enig beeld geeft over de hardware compatibiliteit in andere projecten ook.

In totaal hebben wij 9120 systemen geanalyseerd over 12 verschillende klanten.

Windows 7 hardware assessment

De hardware assessment is uitgevoerd middels de Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit (MAP). Op basis van deze hardware assessments blijkt dat gemiddeld:

• 92% van de huidige hardware Windows 7 ready is.
• 8% is na een hardware upgrade* Windows 7 ready.

*In de meeste gevallen volstaat een upgrade van het geheugen of uitbreiding van vrije disk ruimte. In uitzonderlijke gevallen moet de BIOS geüpgrade worden om Windows 7 te kunnen installeren.

Windows 7 software assessment

Naast de geschiktheid van de hardware is tevens geanalyseerd of de huidige device drivers voldoen van de systemen. We zijn verder gegaan en hebben ook gekeken naar applicaties maar dat is een ander onderwerp.

Onderstaande grafiek geeft de ondersteuning van device drivers via verschillende beschikbare media weer. Opvallend is het hoge percentage out-of-the-box driver ondersteuning van Windows 7. Dit komt mede doordat Microsoft in vroeg tijdig stadium hardware vendors/fabrikanten betrokken heeft bij de ontwikkeling van Windows 7. Dit in tegenstelling tot Windows Vista.

Windows 7 Distribution share MDT 2010 check

Wanneer je met MDT 2010 Windows 7 deployed en je verwijst naar de distribution share op dezelfde server... lees dit dan even goed door.

Dubbel check

Bij het testen van de distribution share is gebleken dat elke user in kan loggen op de distribution share en toegang heeft tot alle bestanden en mappen onder deze folder structuur.

Ik heb het hier over de situatie waarbij je de MDT 2010 server in het domein hangt en je vervolgens ongewilt domain users lees rechten geeft op de distribution share. De restricted groups zijn in dat geval nog niet juist geimplementeerd.

Wanneer je geen restricted groups op een server rol implementeerd zullen domain users toegang krijgen tot een onaangenaam aantal resources.

Dit komt omdat by default de local users group als lid de domain users group krijgen. Dit is op zich niets nieuws. Daarom passen we Restricted groups immers ook toe.

Het is altijd belangrijk goed te kijken naar de bestaande OU stuctuur en hoe Restricted groups worden toegepast.

In de praktijk

In verschillende situaties heb ik gezien dat de OU hierarchie vaak op basis van Server rol is ingedeeld. Per server rol worden restricted groups gekoppeld aan Global groups. Echter gaat het bij het implementeren van MDT 2010 in sommige omgevingen om een nieuwe server rol. De MDT server komt dan onder een nieuwe OU. Echter nog niet met de juiste restricted group configuratie in de policy.

Testen

Gelukkig test je dit van te voren. Wanneer je deze situatie herkent is het raadzaam het benaderen van de distribution share even te controleren met een representatief user account.

Risico

In de distribution share kan je namelijk het account en wachtwoord achterhalen waarmee computer accounts in het domein gehangen worden. Als je geen gebruik maakt van delegaties op OU niveau dan kan dat dus betekenen dat men het customsettings.ini bestand uit kan lezen en een domain admin account in handen kan krijgen. Daarnaast is het achterhaalde OU delegatie account voor het toevoegen van computer accounts ook iets wat je niet graag deelt.

Windows 7 officieel te downloaden!

Sinds gisteren is Windows 7 te downloaden voor Microsoft partners, mensen met toegang tot MSDN en Technet. Vanaf 1 september kunnen zakelijke klanten die geen Software Assurance hebben Windows 7 downloaden. Voor consumenten is Windows 7 op 22 oktober aanstaande beschikbaar.

Op dit moment is Windows 7 alleen beschikbaar in Engels en 4 andere talen. Medio augustus zal het Nederlandse Language Pack beschikbaar zijn.

Technet Magazine: Windows 7 in de praktijk

Zojuist is het nieuwe Technet Magazine van deze maand op de mat gevallen. In het technet magazine heb ik een atikel geschreven over de ervaringen die wij hebben opgedaan bij de implementatie van Windows 7 bij de 11 organisaties met wie wij momenteel een proefproject ondernemen. Het is een artikel dat voornamelijk met een technische achtergrond is geschreven. M.a.w. waar zijn we tegenaan gelopen, wat zijn de indrukken van beheerders, hoe zijn we om gegaan met applicatie compatibiliteit etc.

Windows 7 RTM Announcement

Windows 7 was natuurlijk al even RTM maar nu heft Microsoft ook een algemene mail uitgestuurd met de mededeling. Aangezien er een aantal interessante links in staan wil ik hem niet onthouden:

Wortell migreert Unica naar Windows 7

Wortell voert bij een 12-tal organisaties een Windows 7 migratie uit voordat Windows 7 daadwerkelijk op de markt beschikbaar is. Over de afgelopen maanden heb ik daar diverse posts aan gewijd. Inmiddels zijn de meeste van deze migraties overigens afgerond. Op Computable.nl is een artikel verschenen over 1 van onze Windows 7 proefimplementaties. Het betrof de implementatie bij dienstverlener Unica.

Terwijl velen met spanning wachten op het besturingssysteem Windows 7, zijn enkele bedrijven er al mee aan de slag via het Technology Adoption Program (TAP) van Microsoft. Zoals de technische dienstverlener Unica. Computable neemt een kijkje.

Windows 7 applicaties: Mobile Connect Card

Iedereen die van Windows XP naar Windows Vista is gemigreerd en een Vodafone Mobile Connect Card gebruikte weet het. Dat stomme ding werkte niet onder Windows Vista. Gelukkig is dat voor de migratie van Windows Vista naar Windows 7 beter. Ikzelf gebruikte een Vodafone Mobile Connect Card en heb deze nu ook op mijn Windows 7 machine geinstalleerd. Behoudens een foutmelding waarin aangegeven wordt dat Windows de maker van het pakket niet kan verifieren (beste programmeurs, leer eens je software goed te signen) werkte het als een zonnetje. Wel diende ik een keer opnieuw op te starten.

Iets wat redelijk frustrerend is, is dat telkens als je verbindt met de Mobile Connect Card je standaard Windows Account niet wordt overgenomen bij bijvoorbeeld OCS. Dit betekend dat je opnieuw moet inloggen.

RTM Planning Windows 7

Binnenkort zal Windows 7 officieel te verkrijgen zijn. Leuk, want de afgelopen tijd hebben we bij Wortell hard gewerkt aan de inrichting van een 12tal omgevingen bij een grote diversiteit aan klanten. Op het Windows 7 team blog is inmiddels een post geplaatst waarin de definitieve planning van beschikbaarheid (RTM) is beschreven. Kort gezegd:

• Partners & OEM's: 6 augustus
• Zakelijke klanten met SA: 6 augustus
• Zakelijke klanten zonder SA: 1 september
• Consumenten: 22 oktober

Overigens zal in eerste instantie alleen de engelse versie beschikbaar zijn. De overige versies zullen daarna beschikbaar komen (1 oktober).

I recognize this is an important question to have answered. Many of you have said you want to know exactly when you will be able to get your hands on RTM. Last Monday, I gave an update on RTM to close out some myths. In that update, I also gave a broad timeline on when different groups of people – or "audiences" – would get the final RTM code.

While I have nothing new to add regarding RTM today, I do however have more precise information to give on when you will be able to get RTM. Again, when you can get RTM depends on who you are.

For Partners & OEMs:

ISV (Independent software vendor) and IHV (Independent hardware vendor) Partners will be able to download Windows 7 RTM from Microsoft Connect or MSDN on August 6th. There is already a lot of momentum from ISVs and IHVs in the ecosystem today for Windows 7 as Mike Nash blogged last week. If you are a partner who has been working on Windows 7 for a while, now is the time to complete your testing with final version of Windows 7. For partners that haven't gotten started yet with Windows 7, now is the time to get involved. You can also visit www.readyset7.com to learn more about getting ready for Windows 7.

Microsoft Partner Program Gold/Certified Members will be able to download Windows 7 RTM in English through the Microsoft Partner Network (MPN) Portal on August 16th. By October 1st, the remaining languages will become available to download.

Microsoft Action Pack Subscribers will be about to download Windows 7 RTM in English starting August 23rd. By October 1st, the remaining languages will become available to download.

OEMs will receive Windows 7 RTM software images beginning approximately 2 days after we officially RTM, as a little time is required to release and distribute these images. This will allow them to begin preparing images for new PCs to ship with Windows 7 on them. We know our OEMs are excited for Windows 7 and we can't wait to hand them the final RTM bits!

For Business Customers:

If you are a Volume License (VL) customer with an existing Software Assurance (SA) license you will be able to download Windows 7 RTM in English starting August 7th via the Volume License Service Center (VLSC). The rest of the languages for Windows 7 RTM should be available within a couple of weeks after that.

Volume License customers without a SA license will be able to purchase Windows 7 through Volume Licensing on September 1st as we announced last week at WPC09. Mark these dates on your calendar and start making your deployment plans!

For IT Professionals:

There are a few ways you can get Windows 7 RTM. IT Professionals with TechNet Subscriptions will be able to download Windows 7 RTM in English on August 6th and remaining languages by October 1st.

IT Professionals at companies with Volume Licensing see above on how you can get Windows 7 RTM.

We have quite a bit of resources for IT Professionals to use to become experts on Windows 7 and to aid in their deployments. Those resources can be found at the Springboard Series.

For Developers:

Developers with MSDN Subscriptions will be able to download Windows 7 RTM in English on August 6th and remaining languages by October 1st.

For Beta Testers & Enthusiasts:

The special pre-order offer we did offering Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional at almost 50% discount was done with our beta testers in mind. And many of you jumped at the chance to take advantage of this deal – thank you!

I know there have been some rumors going around about a "family pack" for Windows 7. We have heard a lot of feedback from beta testers and enthusiasts over the last 3 years that we need a better solution for homes with multiple PCs. I'm happy to confirm that we will indeed be offering a family pack of Windows 7 Home Premium (in select markets) which will allow installation on up to 3 PCs. As I've said before, stay tuned to our blog for more information on this and any other potential offers.

Beta testers will not automatically receive a free copy of Windows 7. Many beta testers are already subscribers to TechNet; those of you who fit that description will be able to download Windows 7 RTM shortly after RTM happens for free as part of your subscription.

However, if you don't have TechNet and are waiting for GA (to either purchase Windows 7 or wait for your pre-order to arrive) you can continue to use the RC. In fact, you can continue to use it until it expires on June 1st, 2010 (expiration actually starts March 1, 2010, this is when the reboots start).

While our special pre-order offer with the near 50% has ended, Windows 7 can still be pre-ordered today from the various online retailers (including the Microsoft Store).

We are also going to release an evaluation of Windows 7 Professional for IT Professionals via the Springboard Series shortly after RTM. Over 40% of beta testers are IT Professionals and this will allow them to quickly access the RTM code and plan for deployments.

For Consumers:

Windows 7 will be in retail stores and shipping on new PCs starting October 22nd. If you pre-ordered Windows 7, it should be delivered sometime around the October 22nd timeframe (depends on the retailer).

Ohh My God I'm Gonna Puke

In de US heeft enige tijd de commercial Ohh My God I'm Gonna Puke gedraaid. Deze commecial diende de nieuwe InPrivate Browsing Feature van IE 8 onder de aandacht te brengen. Door verschillende klachten heeft Microsoft hem uiteindelijk in de US van de buis moeten halen. Hieronder de video op YouTube:
