Microsoft Live@edu is pleased to introduce a new service for customers who use the Outlook Live e-mail platform: Live@edu Organization. This service introduces new features and administrative capabilities for Outlook Live that provides significant administrative flexibility, and is now the default feature set for all new Live@edu customers who select Outlook Live.

Highlights of Live@edu Organization include:

  • Multi-mailbox search  This feature provides a method to search for e-mail messages and other electronic communication sent and received by people in your organization, and to manage the results of the search.
  • Streamlined on-boarding experience for users  This new service lets users start to use Outlook Live immediately, without having to accept terms of use or receive parental consent.
  • Transport Rules (coming soon)  These are organization-wide rules that an administrator can use to control the flow of e-mail messages inside, and into and out of their organization.

The features that are included with Live@edu Organization change the underlying data ownership model and contract relationship with Microsoft. Therefore, all existing customers must sign a new Terms of Use agreement (TOU) before we can enable Live@edu Organization for your school. Please be aware that this change to the TOU affects Outlook Live only and does not affect other Windows Live services which remain subject to Microsoft's standard consumer terms and conditions which are accepted by each End User.

Action Required

Please familiarize yourself with the new features enabled by Live@edu Organization and the associated changes to the privacy model via the links below.  If you still have questions after reviewing those links, then please visit the Live@edu Organization forum on Outlook Live Answers.

  • Read about Live@edu Organization for Outlook Live
  • View a podcast on changes to the privacy model

To move your school to Live@edu Organization, please follow the steps below before September 14, 2009.  If you do not sign the new TOU prior to this date, then you must wait for the TOU acceptance window to reopen in Spring 2010.

  • Visit the Live@edu Organization Terms of Use Web site here and authenticate using the Outlook Live administrator ID associated with your domain.
  • Review the TOU. Select "I accept" if you want to enable the Live@edu Organization feature set for your school.
  • Allow seven to ten business days for Microsoft to migrate Outlook Live for your school to Live@edu Organization after you accept the TOU.
  • Make your selection prior to September 14, 2009. If you do not take action before this date, then you must wait for the TOU acceptance window to reopen in Spring 2010.
  • If your school has more than one tenant domain, please repeat the above steps for each domain by logging into the Live@edu Organization Terms of Use Web site here and authenticating with the Outlook Live administrator ID associated with each additional tenant domain.

Even ter referentie.

RIM BlackBerry Devices

Microsoft Online Services provides three paths for Research in Motion (RIM) BlackBerry device users to access Exchange Online and SharePoint Online.

  • BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS)
  • Microsoft Online Serves hosted BlackBerry service
  • Partner solutions for BlackBerry devices

The following sections detail these offerings for Exchange Online. For Sharepoint Online, BlackBerry users can simply use the browser on their BlackBerry device to access SharePoint Online sites.

BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS)

BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) is available through mobile operators around the globe and enables push e-mail to your BlackBerry device at no additional cost beyond the BIS connection from your mobile operator. Other Exchange Online information – such as Contacts and Calendar – are not pushed to the device through BIS. You can update this type of information on your device using a wired connection.

To set up BIS to use with Exchange Online, your mobile operator, will request your Outlook Web Access (OWA) address, which is determined by the storage location of your Microsoft Online Services data. The storage location is generally the one closest to your company headquarters. The following table provides URLs for storage locations.

Microsoft Online Hosted BlackBerry Service

For customers who already have or prefer to purchase their own BlackBerry client and server licenses, Microsoft Online offers a Hosted BlackBerry service.

Service Delivery Model

With the Hosted BlackBerry service, customers bring the BES licenses they have already purchased to Microsoft to provide hosting and operational support within the Microsoft Online Services data centers. The customer has the following responsibilities:

  • Provide Microsoft with RIM BES Server Routing Protocol (SRP) Identifier, BES license, and client access licenses (CALs) to enable deployment of BlackBerry services in Microsoft Online Services data centers.
  • Include Microsoft its existing RIM support agreement of level TX2 or higher as a "named caller" to enable Microsoft to contact RIM on the customers' behalf for support services.

Microsoft has the following responsibilities:

  • Host and operate Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) in the Microsoft Online Services data center(s)
  • Provide technical support to customer's IT administrator(s), including interfacing with RIM on troubleshooting as needed using customer's existing RIM support agreement

This delivery model may evolve with customer needs and Microsoft capabilities.

Service Features

The Hosted BlackBerry service features encompass the most commonly requested BlackBerry capabilities for Microsoft Online Services customers.

  • Email and Personal Information Management (PIM):

    • Device wipe
    • Password reset
  • BlackBerry handsets supported
    • Blackberry operating system version 4.2 or later

BPOS: Jurisdiction and Location of Data for EU

Many of our customers ask us the question in which country BPOS is hosted for the EU. Next to this we often get the question under which country legislation / jurisdiction is arranged for the Microsoft Online Services.

For the European Countries BPOS is hosted in Ireland. There is a backup environment in Holland.

Legislation / Jurisdiction would be the country where provisioning occurs. For European countries this would therefore be Ireland.

Why is this so important? The largest impact is the European privacy law. This law differs greatly from the American law. A good article about the main differences can be found here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15221111/

Exchange Online in Exchange 2010 On Premise Software

Today the new Exchange 2010 beta was released. After implementation we noticed the possibilities to integrate Exchange Online with an on Premise Deployment.

See the below screenshot:

BPOS Languages

Currently BPOS (Sharepoint, Exchange, Office Live Meeting and Office Communications Online) is available in several languages. Of course Dutch isn't one of them. As fa as I know now Dutch will not be supported in the near future. However, Exchange Webmail (OWA) is available in Dutch. Next to this there is always a possibility to create a Dutch SharePoint site (at least the content).

Most presumably Microsoft decided on this because the Dutch market isn't large enough and most Dutch people speak English.

Hotelketen Scandic gaat BPOS gebruiken
